When I began my career as a math teacher at South Atlanta High School, I knew that our students had a tremendous amount of potential. Now as principal of the South Atlanta School of Law and Social Justice, I am continually amazed at the work our students produce and the progress that they have made.By reducing the size of the school and personalizing student support I believe we have been able to create an environment where students can receive the help that they need and develop positive relationships with adults. In a recent survey, over 81% of students indicated that there was at least one adult in the building whom they could trust. This figure is dramatically higher than results in large comprehensive high schools and even other small schools As a result, on a daily basis we are proving that through high expectations and personal relationships our students can make dramatic progress. Test scores have doubled and tripled. Students have presented to the Atlanta City Council, created digital movies and conducted mock trials at the CNN Center. The South Atlanta School of Law and Social Justice is well on its way to setting the pace for the district, state and nation as we prepare ours students for success beyond high school and postive leadership in our local and global communities.
