New NAHS Digs In the Works
Work is underway on the new home of North Atlanta High School, located at 4111 Northside Parkway – just 3.6 miles north of our present location. The new campus complex is scheduled to open fall of 2013.
NAHS Interim Principal Mark MyGrant has described the 56-acre future campus as a dream site for a high school. There are two existing office buildings on the site. One 11-story building will be re-designed to provide nearly 400,000 square feet of instructional space. The top eight floors will house the four NAHS small learning communities, while the bottom three floors will encompass a cafeteria, library and administrative offices. The second building will be razed to make room for a new building that will consist of a gymnasium, 600-seat auditorium, theater and other performing arts space. An existing parking deck, a FieldTurf athletic field and other athletic facilities will round out the new campus. The new campus represents one of the largest investments by Atlanta Public Schools on the north side of town in decades and comes in response to dramatic increases K-12 enrollment in the North Atlanta cluster. The current North Atlanta campus will become the new home of Sutton Middle School. For the next year, North Atlanta students will continue to enjoy their recently renovated, state-of-the-art campus at its existing location at 2475 Northside Drive. The $30 million plus project included a face lift for more than 200,000 square feet of instructional and common interior spaces complete with new furniture, lockers, lighting, flooring ceilings, doors, windows, hardware and paint. Renovated performance and multi-purpose spaces included dance, chorus and drama rooms; theatre, exhibition hall, lecture hall, media center and cafeteria. Improvements to athletic facilities included new gym bleachers, refinished gym floor, refurbished locker room, concession stand, tennis courts, softball &baseball field (including irrigation system); and installation of a FieldTurf ™(artificial turf) athletic field. In addition, the school’s exterior spaces were improved through a new central courtyard, new landscaping, new covered walkways into major entrances, resurfaced parking lots, lighting and drainage systems. Finally, technology enhancements included two MAC labs, additional classroom computers and white boards in all classrooms.
