History: In 1984-85, Douglass High School initiated CFEAT, a unique program to meet the needs of students interested in engineering and science and business technology. The first graduating class had fifty students. The program has grown to over five hundred students and is well known for its academic accomplishments.

CFEAT consists of two phases.

Phase I is one of the most rigorous college preparatory programs in Atlanta Public Schools

Phase II is a challenging preparatory program for college or vocational technical schools.

The CFEAT Small Learning Community provides students with opportunities to participate in many exciting, meaningful, and even challenging extra curricular activities at Douglass High School.  These extra curricular activities include Georgia Technology Student Association, US First Robotics Competition, Atlanta Youth Apprenticeship Program, Jets, Inc., Black Data Professional Association (BDPA) High School Computer Competition, Douglass and Morehouse Mentoring Program (DAMP), and the National Society of Black Engineers.

Georgia Technology Student Association (TSA) is the state’s unit of the national Technology Student Association.  We have a local TSA chapter at Douglass High School.  Although our membership is open to all students, we strongly encourage CFEAT students to join the organization.  Therefore, the overwhelming majority of our members are CFEAT students.  We attend TSA sponsored events that provide leadership training to help our students develop the skills needed to work within organizations.

Students also train over the school year to participate in the TSA state competitive events held during the TSA State Conference each spring.  During this competition students compete in over forty technologies related events with the hopes of going on to compete at the national TSA Conference. This year we participated in eleven competitive events and placed in the top ten for three events. We secured a 2^nd place win in the 3-D Computer Aided Drawing event.

Our SLC provides mentoring and tutoring support to our CFEAT scholars through our long-term relationship with the Atlanta University Center’s chapter of NSBE (National Society of Black Engineers).  College students from that chapter come to Douglass to provide weekly tutoring in math and science for CFEAT scholars.  The college students also organize and advise our school’s NSBE (NSBE Jr.) chapter.

Unique Features of CFEAT:

• Students are engaged in career-oriented activities.

• Students receive instructions and inspiration from members of the SAME (Society of American Military Engineers) Organization.
• Students are provided with opportunities to participate in local, state, as well as national competition in engineering and technology.
• Students have access to Project Lead The Way, the national Pre-Engineering Initiative.
• Students have access to a state of the art student resource center.
