Toomer Elementary School continues to accomplish targets and goals set, while discovering new ways to surpass them!

School Accomplishments:
  • Met Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) for the 7th consecutive year ~ 2002-2009
  • 2009 Georgia Public Policy Foundation - No Excuses School ~ 2008-2009 
  • Met 88% of Student Achievement Targets set forth by Superintendent, Dr. Hall ~ 2007-2008
  • State of Georgia - No Excuses School ~ 2007-2008 
  • Met Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) for the 6th consecutive year ~ 2002-2007
  • Exceeded Superintendent's Targets for 6 consecutive years ~ 2002-2007
  • Received highest honors for surpassing 100 percent of the targets set by the superintendent on the Georgia Criterion Referenced Competency Tests (GCRCT) in Reading, Math and English/Language Arts (ELA) in the 2005-2006 academic year

  • Flagship Chinese Immersion Program - Our mandarin Chinese program is the first and only public elementary school in the state of Georgia to offer Mandarin as the language of choice.

Facilities:

  • New playground was built by the Atlanta Falcons and the Atlanta Boys and Girls Club, 2004-2005
  • New wireless assess computer lab, 2008
  • Hands on Atlanta Day - enhancements made in the Spring and Fall of each year
 
The faculty/staff and students at Toomer Elementary School have consistently produced successful results. Their awards, recognitions, and achievements are outlined below:

Principal's Recognitions:

Toomer, which sends students to Coan Middle School, the site of the Confucius Institute, received a grant from the state of Georgia to research Chinese language programs. As a part of the research, the school's former principal, Dr. Tonya Saunders traveled to schools in Chicago; Portland, Ore., and Washington to learn about Chinese language programs there.

Faculty and Staff Members:

  • Ms. Megan Dosmann was a recipient of the Atlanta Families Award that honored her as one of thirteen outstanding teachers in Atlanta Public School. Ms. Dosmann implemented the "Wild about Math" program that provided students with individualized attention in mathematics. This led to 93% of Ms. Dosmann's 3rd graders meeting or exceeding state standards as measured by the GCRCT.
  • Mrs. Shaneene Fannin received a TARGET Local School Grant, 2007-2008, to promote literacy and foster a love for reading amongst the Prekindergarten through 2nd grade students. Grant funds will pay for three storytellers, four adult volunteer reader breakfasts, reading incentive gifts, student breakfast snacks, and books for each student, during the 2008-2009 school year.
  • Mr. Dwight Hardy was a finalist for APS's Teacher of the Year (TOTY) for the 2006-2007 academic year.
  • Recipient of a Student-run Bookstore Grant ~ 2007 - 2008 - Staffed by Toomer Elementary students. Students interviewed for their job position. Jobs titles included: cashier, stock clerk, and manager. The student employees and student patrons obtained real-world experiences!
