Message from
Our Principal,
Ni Hao!
(Hello)
I would like to personally welcome you to the website of Fred Armon Toomer Elementary School, home of the only Mandarin Chinese program in a public elementary school, in the state of Georgia! On behalf of the entire faculty, staff, students and community stakeholders, I wish to encourage you to go beyond this virtual tour and call the school for a visit of our beautiful facility and meet our dynamic staff. The Toomer family understands the importance of serving the cognitive, emotional, social and physical needs of our children and strives to be your “East Lake and Kirkwood's neighborhood school choice!”
The Toomer Elementary School family is excited you have taken the time to learn more about our school and all that we have to offer. Toomer is a place where you will observe rigorous instruction, embedded with best practices and aligned with the Common Core Georgia Performance Standards. Additionally, instruction is differentiated to meet the needs of all learners. Lessons, skills and activities are created for students that match their individual learning style(s). Children are actively engaged throughout the school day. As a result of these efforts, student achievement has risen dramatically. Through the continuous efforts of all faculty/staff, parents and community stakeholders, we have seen a dramatic increase in the number of students qualifying for the Challenge Program, Atlanta Public School’s instructional model to meet the needs of gifted learners.
Toomer’s teachers and children incorporate the sensible use of technology via the Internet, classroom computers and Promethean boards. Web based programs and software utilized by teachers and children include: BrainPOP, Georgia Online Assessment Systems (GOAS), Study Island, and others.
Our Mandarin Chinese program is in its’ sixth year of implementation and students are able to speak, write and understand the written language. The Chinese culture is integrated across all content areas, thus familiarizing our students with life in China.
It is our belief at Toomer that a close cooperative relationship, between the home and school, is essential to promoting the best interest of the children. Parents are encouraged to visit the school, volunteer and attend meetings regularly. Mutual benefits occur when there is a meaningful exchange of information between the home and school.
Once again, thank you for taking time out to learn more about our wonderful school. I look forward to working with you and your child(ren) throughout this academic year. If I may be of service, please feel free to contact me at the school.
Cheng Zhi,
(Sincerely)
Dr. Nicole Evans Jones
