Most of What You Need to Know!!!

 

  • All students need a “can do” attitude, effort and manners
  • All students are expected to wear the school uniform

  • Cell phones and electronic devices may NOT be brought to school.
 School Hours – 8:45 -3:45
Students enter the building at 8:20; breakfast is served between 8:20 and 8:40. Supervision is provided before and after school from 8:20 – 4:00. 
 
Before /After –School Activities - Parents are required to sign permission for students to participate in all before or after school activities. Students are not permitted to be on campus before or after supervision hours unless they have permission to be involved in an activity and are under the direct supervision of the adult sponsoring the before or after school activity.
  • Electronic devices and Cell Phones – Are not permitted in APS middle schools. Items will be confiscated. A parent can retrieve the item upon payment of the $25 fine.  A parent may complete and submit the Serious Medical Conditions /Unusual Circumstances Form for approval of the Principal to permit a student to have their cell phone turned off and stored during the school day.  Phones and devices in the classroom or out during the school day are subject to confiscation and $25 fine.
  • Telephone Use -Make arrangements for pick up and after-school plans ahead of time. Students may only use a school phone with permission from a teacher or other member of the school staff. We permit student to use the school phones to call home only in cases of emergency.
  • School Uniforms students are expected to wear the school uniform. The school uniform is black or khaki pants, shorts or skirts and red polo style shirts or grade level color shirts.  Periodically we may have out of uniform days. Uniforms are required for field trips and programs. Pants and shirts must adhere to the APS dress code, no sagging.
  • Lockers- All students are required to rent lockers ($7) for storage of books, supplies, coats, book bags and personal belongings. Coats and book bags are not permitted in the classroom.  Students may only access their lockers at designated times. Lockers may not be shared. Students will receive a free backpack when they purchase a locker. 
  • School Supplies – Coan students will be expected to have their own essential supplies throughout the school year.  Essential supplies: loose leaf paper, three ring binder, spiral notebooks, dividers, folders, pens, pencils, color pencils, and Thumb drive to store work from computer.  Teachers will notify students and parents of additional supplies as needed. Please notify the counselor or teacher if it will be difficult for you to provide essential supplies due to cost.
  • Attendance/ Tardiness/ Late to class- students are expected to be at school and in each class on time daily. Excessive tardiness (more than three (3), will result in consequences.
  • Excused/Unexcused Absences - Parents/guardians must provide written notice regarding student absences and or tardiness, for illness, medical appointment or court appearance.  The student must give the note to the homeroom teacher upon returning to school. Students are permitted one day for each absence to make up missed work. Absences for which no note is provided are unexcused and may not allow for missed work to be made up.
  • Early Dismissal – Students are expected to remain in school the entire school day. Parent must provide a detailed reason for the early dismissal. It is the student’s responsibility to get assignments and missed work.
  • Illness during the school day – If a student is sick in the morning, the school expects him/her to stay home. If a student becomes ill during the school day, they will be issued a pass to the nurse. If the student is a condition that he/she cannot return to class, the parent will be called to pick up the student from school. Please provide contact numbers for emergencies such as illness/injury at school.
  • Making up work- Students are responsible for making up the work they missed for the days they missed school. Upon returning to school from an absence, students must see each of their teachers to collect the work they are missing and return that work to their teachers in a timely manner.  An excused absence is not an excuse for not turning in class-work and homework.
  • Medical conditions – Conditions which require medication during the school day, you must contact the school nurse a note with details as to the method, Frequency from the physician and permitting the school to administer the medicine must be dispensed by the school nurse. No medication will be dispensed to a student without this documentation in their files. No student may dispense medication to themselves or others at any time.
  • Coan Clinic – The Coan clinic provides comprehensive health services. Parents/guardians must complete the registration form for the Clinic to be seen by a Health care provider. Only health professionals in the Clinic can provide medication. 
  • Contact of student during the school day – In case of emergency, call the main office, they will get a message to the student. 
  • Text books – Every student is assigned a text book for each core class, it is the student’s responsibility to keep the textbook in excellent condition, bring it to class when required and return the book at the end of the school year. Text books are VERY expensive.  Parents are responsible for paying for lost textbooks, record holds will be placed for failure to pay for lost text books.
  • Computer/Internet Use – Use of technology is an important tool of 21st century learning. Parents/ Guardians must sign and return the Internet Access/Agreement form for their student to use school computers. Students are expected to: develop and use basic to advanced computer skills; adhere to the technology use guidelines and procedures.
  • Homework- is assigned daily, in core subjects and as assigned in connections classes. Homework is not completed during class time. Some assignments are long term and designed to be worked on in part each day until completion at the end of a week or more. Don’t wait until the day before the due date to start!!! 
  • Tutorials- Students are encouraged to stay after-school for tutorial to receive extra help as needed. Parents must return a Permission Form for students to stay after school for tutorial.
  • Mandatory Tutorial is provided for all students performing at Level I (below 800) in Reading and/or Math. Students in this category will be provided a letter and tutorial schedule. The mandatorily tutorial schedule and letter mandating participation will be sent to  
  • Extracurricular Activities – Students are encouraged to participate in extra- curricular activities.  A list of clubs and activities will be provided. Parents/Guardians must sign and return permission forms for participation in all after-school activities.
  • Concerns /Problems- The first point of contact regarding a student’s academic performance and/or other “getting along” issues should FIRST be directed to the student’s advisor or 2nd period  teacher. Use the number provided on the teacher’s syllabus. Parents or students may contact the counselor at 404 802-6614.
  •  Lost & Found- Each grade level will have an area designated for found items. Students are expected to put their names on coats, books….for easy identification. Items not retrieved at the end of the semester are donated.
  • Field Trips- are planned to provide academic and cultural enrichment for students. Parent must complete a signed permission slip for the student to participate. Students are required to wear the school uniform on Field Trips.
