Welcome to 6th Grade Girls' Reading! Ms. Jill Nixon BA: The University of Southern Indiana MA: Indiana University Dear Family, I hope you are enjoying Sylvan Hills Middle School as much as I am enjoying my students this school year! I cherish the opportunity to teach and learn with your daughter this school year. Your daughter’s individual learning styles, interests, and readiness continue to be celebrated in reading class. Your daughter and her peers continue to engage rigorous texts at and beyond their grade level. Your daughter is expected to reference the text in her daily reading responses in order to progressively advance her reading comprehension skills to become college and career ready by graduation! We continue to be Sylvan Ready in reading! Students are expected to demonstrate Sylvan Readiness including: Be Respectful, Be Engaged, Be Punctual, Be Prepared, and Be Presentable. Students need to arrive daily to class with a pen/pencil, paper, and their agenda. Most importantly, the desire to learn is mandatory in reading class! I am enjoying getting to know you and working together to help your daughter achieve her greatness in reading. Please contact me any time you need any support!
My Philosophy of Education: I view my role as a teacher to be a facilitator of learning. Each child’s individual greatness must be recognized and developed. As the Sylvan Hills Middle School 6th grade girls’ reading teacher, it is my responsibility to diagnose and monitor my students’ learning styles and interests, readiness levels, and progress throughout the school year. Through differentiated, project-based, and inquiry-based instruction embedded in best practices, all students can and will learn to apply Georgia’s Common Core State Standards for 6th grade reading to their daily learning.
